Flying the colors

All it needed was his first visit to Thompson-Boling Arena.

New University of Tennessee football coach Derrick Dooley said he knew he made the right decision to come to UT, where he attended his first basketball game at school.

"What sold me was the first basketball game. To see 22,000 fans there and the basketball team has responded, he said.

Dooley and UT men's head basketball coach Bruce Pearl were on hand Thursday morning when the Big Orange caravan stopped at the Capitol Theatre in Maryville. Fans packed the room and enjoyed a breakfast buffet served by the Downtown Sullivan.

Coach Dooley gave the fans a little story about his life, how he obtained a law degree and actually practiced for 18 months before choosing to continue training. "People ask me why I left the law. I think the question is why I went to law school in the first place after growing up in a family of football. I missed the important role of football, watching young people grow up and just be able to affect their lives positively, "he said. "This is a great profession.
